Newsletter 6th December

             December 6th, 2018

Gardening:  Michael Costello will be in school on Thursday the 13th December for his final lesson this term. If you have not already paid, the cost per lesson is €1.00 with a total of 5 lessons and this can be brought in on the day.

Gymstar Gymnastics:  The final session of gymnastics will take place next Thursday the 13th of December. If you have not already paid, the cost of gymnastics is €2 per person per session with a total of six sessions.  The children have really enjoyed their sessions with the coaches and we would like to thank Gymstars Gymnastics club for all their work with the children.

Bric-a-Brac Sale of Work:  The annual Bric-a-Brac sale of work will take place on Wednesday the 19th of December at 1.30pm immediately after the Infant Nativity play in the hall.  Fifth and Sixth class children are organising the stalls and games.  If anyone has soft toys/teddies, toys, board games, children’s books or small souvenirs in good condition the children would be delighted to get them.  These can be dropped into the school from next Thursday the 13th of December up until the morning of the Bric-a-Brac, Wednesday the 19th.  Proceeds from the sale of work will be used to buy gifts for children in poorer countries and picked by the children.  We will also be purchasing some gardening equipment for the school.  Also, on the day the Parents Association will have a stall (run by 5th and 6th class pupils) raffling off a beautiful child’s bicycle, donated by Angela O’Rourke (who used to have the shop in Gusserane).  Proceeds of this raffle will go to the Parents Association.

Science Week Update:  Well done to Lucy Power (5th) on winning a certificate of Merit in the Carlow Insstitute of Technology Science Competition “Eureka 2018”.  Lucy was presented with her Certificate at a function in CIT.  She designed and invented “A Rainbow Spray”.

Thanks also to the pupils of Ramsgrange Community School on their visit to Gusserane NS to present a Science workshop to all the children.  It was a fabulous event and the children got to experience everything from a demonstration of static electricity, to sound vibrations, to a chemical reaction and the high point real cows’ eyeballs, heart, lungs etc.  The children really enjoyed the latter.  Thanks to the Ramsgrange Science teacher Tara and Trina Barron for giving of their time to organize this event.

FAI Futsol Final:  Gusserane NS participated in the FAI Futsol finals in Horeswood Sports centre recently.  The boys from 3rd and 4th classes did themselves proud in all their matches.  Gusserane United qualified for the A Cup final after emerging from a tough group involving Duncannon NS and Poulfur NS.  In the semi-final they had a fantastic victory 3-1 over an excellent Rathgarogue NS.  In the Final they played fantastically against a very good Glynn NS team, but victory eluded them on a score 1-3.  Gusserane Rovers team got to the C semi-final after a couple of very tough matches.

Gusserane United – Tommy Byrne, Alex Egan, Eoin Kehoe, Liam Murphy, Conor Power, Luke Webster and Lee Whitty.

Gusserane Rovers – Ben Barron, Ryan Barron, Charlie Coveney, Sean Egan, Oliver Lis, Jack McCormack and Cathal Rossiter.

It was the first time the pupils wore their new set of school jerseys sponsored by Acemotor Factors and they wore them with pride.

School Calendar 2019:  Well done to the Parents Association for the beautiful school calendar they have produced for 2019.  Great thanks must go to Pat Browne of Browne’s Photography, New Ross for the stunning photographs he took of the children and the giving of his time to this project.  This calendar will make a beautiful keepsake for 2019 and into the future.  Well done again to all concerned.
